In the end I think the defeat did England good. We see it as failure, but I see as it learning. Since then England have really improved and we took a serious look at ourselves and got to semi finals of 2018 world cup. It was embarrassing yes, but in my eyes it was a harsh lesson learned and we improved in so many areas since then like taking penalties, winning our opening game and actually playing as a damn team!

Maybe because the tournaments are only every 2 years, plus you have to qualify to get in, plus there's loads of other decent countries in it, plus there can only be one winner and its knockout football. Maybe that's why?

Yeah yeah blah blah maybe the prem is just overrated and English players really aren't as good as people seem to think. Prem players big advantage is conditioning and physicality. That doesn't matter nearly as much in international tournaments were technical prowess and tactics are far more important.

To avoid disappointment in future tournaments, I think England just need to accept they are no good. Yes the premier league is probably the best and most popular domestic league in the world but most of the best players in each position are foreigners. English managers are too scared to travel abroad and improve their craft in foreign leagues preferring to stay at home and not get the same experience as top class managers from other nations who travel across the continent. The media and gullible fans are guilty for believing their own supposed superiority constantly without having any real substance to justify it.

England players are mentally weak. They can't handle the pressure and expectation of playing for England in big games. The 2nd half against Iceland was the epitome of this, they collapsed mentally. Couldn't even make basic 10 yard passes. All they were thinking about were the headlines when they got home. England literally haven't beaten a noted side in a knockout game since 1996 lol. And that was when we had home advantage. Argentina, Brazil, Italy (twice), Portugal (twice), Germany, Croatia, Uruguay. 0 for 9 in knockout games against quality opposition. Any many wouldn't even include Croatia in that.

What gets on my tits about this they go on like Iceland are a terrible team. If they had done there research they would come across Iceland being the most improved team in Europe. They pumped a load of money into facilities & player development. There was a reason Holland didn't qualify for the tournament... Iceland beat them twice. The sheer arrogance of the England team, pundits and press. Assuming they should just breeze past Iceland. When they haven't won a tournament since before the end of The Vietnam War. F*** Off Neville!

A midfield three of Dier, Dele and an over-the-hill Rooney was curtains. All three can't control a midfield. We have always had midfield players who can control matches, who are not fashionable, either sat on the bench or not even picked. Instead they go for guys who catch headlines or score a few goals. We have never valued controlling midfield players as high as they do on the continent. Players like Carrick, Scholes were barely ever consistently used properly. In Italy or Spain they would have had 80-100 caps minimum just controlling the matches. In 2016 they had plenty of central midfield players(less fashionable) who could have controlled the matches.

there was a guy is school who was essentially a bully. He would cut people down by what they wore or how they looked to the point they almost broke down. One guy had had enough and took him out, outside the chip shop at lunchtime with three swift, unexpected punches. He had underestimated his victim and over-estimated his confidence, or arrogance. Neville has just said it. For two years England were 'pretty good, beat Germany, done well against Holland and France. We were really confident'. So, who was Iceland? Never underestimate the little guy.

Problem over the years have been... negative/old international football tactics... picking players by reputation over by system or form... club rivalries in England have always been too big vs international... it's been spoken about South American players love playing for their countries seeing their mates... England? they hated each other weekly... hard to be "mates" for a few weeks just doesn't work... (Happened in Spain as well (RM vs Barca rivalry) for many years/decades Spain underperformed. Gary is also right... England players look tired even at the start of the tournament... but every other league play similar amount of games... Key is England players struggle massively in the heat... these players grow up playing in the cold 24/7 England have like 4 weeks of summer a year... in 30-35 degree heat they melt and look lethargic. It's simple geographic thing... All the big European powerhouses are geographically located closer to the equator they have longer summers, grew up with playing in the heat... same with South America. Lastly player selection... in the "golden" years... 2000-2010... the top premier league teams like United, Arsenal and Chelsea... played completely different to the box standard 442 England plays... why? Every premier league team played with a pivot or holding player... while for England they threw in Gerrard and Lampard in midfield... when they have the best pivot Scholes and Carrick, retired because played out of position and sitting on the bench because he's not a "big name" player. This was especially the case in 2006... Premier league teams were already playing 433... while Sven stuck in the 90s playing 442. Because he didn't want to leave out Owen or Rooney or beckham... but 433 would've suited that team so much better... best CBs in the world with Terry and Ferdinand... best/consistent full backs Cole and Neville... Carrick in the CDM role gerrard and Lampard further forward... had the pacey wingers like Lennon Walcott... or play Rooney on the left and owen down the middle. Even 2018, much less expectations and got to the semi finals... but they still got selections wrong... by did Southgate play 5 at the back? Kyle Walker as a CB? When the whole squad was filled with players from Liverpool/City... United/Spurs etc. Play like those teams!! Very frustrating being an England fan when they continue to make those mistakes in big tournaments. Wrong tactics wrong coaches wrong selections.

I think we (as in English people) over expect on the international stage. We've had great players but we've never been able to put it together as a team. We've got to stop belittling smaller countries as well. All it does is feed into overconfidence then we end up getting smashed because we play like its a friendly. I also think England has the same impact on smaller countries like Man United does on smaller clubs. It's the team to beat because of the aforementioned overconfidence and it's also the country of one of the world's best leagues. Everyone wants to impress while playing against us. We as a country (and especially the media and pundits) need to chill the F out and respect every team we play and accept defeat when a better TEAM wins.
