Thanks. Staying true to myself has always been the direction I set when I started the channel. I think too many people focus on the subs and views initially when they should be focusing on mastering their content. Sub count goes up and down, mine has certainly lost the momentum. It is growing much slower compared to a week ago but it is still growing a lot faster than a month ago. So really, there's nothing to complain.. viewers choose to subscribe, it is not me to force or control :)

Dealing with negativity after a viral video is definitely challenging. I think it kept me from sharing my opinions and being fully myself for a few years because I was afraid of upsetting someone. Then I realized this year that there will be people who are offended by my content no matter what I do so I might as well just be myself. I do consider myself a sensitive person, but dealing with trolls has definitely helped me toughen up a bit. 😅

I have a theory for this... I think the title and thumbnail went against the standard practice we've all been told about getting performing videos. Then you delivered it in the video in a really relatable and honest way. It was actually the first video I've seen of yours and I just liked the exploratory way you try to decipher what's happening with your videos. So, I binged more of your videos because you speak so honestly about what hasn't gone right for you. It's a level of honestly that isn't common on YouTube and I would be willing to bet that smaller channels can relate to your struggles and some of the feelings you have experienced. It's encouraging and inspiring.

But I learn something from there that it doesn't matter what I say, there will be people out there who disagrees depending on what's going on with their life. Unfortunately, YouTube hasn't pushed my videos for 3 years because I am being honest! There's no controversy at all so YouTube chose to ignore me for a bit lol

@djan71
@djan71

@@KevinChee I think if you can analyze your new content then you can learn to control your success better now that you've had a taste of it, because I think being honest is actually something that should do very well, maybe you just had some missing ingredients in your past videos that you're discovering now after persevering and staying strong for so long. Also controversy is actually probably part of what made it do well, it makes you stand out and also invites conversation, even critical comments are good because you can possibly learn from some of them if you set aside your initial feeling and if nothing else, they actually help drive the algorithm too because any engagement is still engagement :D

A big thing for small channels is waiting for the algorithm to figure out who wants to watch your channel. It’s not that 8% is high, it’s the viewers in that 8% have a classification associated with them, and then YouTube targets those that are interested. Your high quality videos were very validating that this can take time, and it’s encouragement to stay consistent so those future viewers have lots to enjoy 😊

I just found your channel recently and I just wanted to thank you for taking us on your Journey. As a small channel, listening to advise from all of the bigger channels that talk about this kind of thing seems almost anecdotal. They all have these millions of views and seem to get traction regardless of what they post. Your transparency with your numbers, and hearing you say that 10 subs a day for you is a good day, really made me feel so proud of my own progress. These massive channels may be on to something, but none of them feel real, and none of them feel as welcoming and supportive as you do. The last few days, I've felt like quitting. This video, and some of the others you have posted are a big part of why I'm still holding on.

"They all have these millions of views and seem to get traction regardless of what they post" - yes, I agree with this. I think they kinda forgot that they have the initial traction due to their channel size. What we as small channel struggle with is getting that initial traction, i.e., how to go from a nobody to somebody. I can tell you for sure that 1 video is all it takes. This video and my last video has, let's just say broken the barrier, and I feel like my channel has been 'ranked up' by YouTube. The journey of how the breakout happened is more important than saying 'improve thumbnail, improve video'

Awesome video man! I'm actually experiencing a similar situation as yours. Recently, one of my videos suddenly blew up after 1 year. Like you said, 98% of the comments are super positive, but the negative ones are coming from people who just want to be right. Even though, if I take time to properly reply to them and explain in a nice way, they continue being aggressive and hateful for no reason whatsoever. It's impossible to have a constructive conversation with some of them. Therefore, I sometimes just delete some of them as I know there is no way I can have a proper debate without animosity and also I don't want to focus on negativity as most of the comments are positive :) Continue what you're doing and I wish you the best in your Youtube journey :)

Hi Kevin, YouTube offered me your boosted video on the home page several times and I watched it with pleasure. I just want to support you here right now. Your channel is okay, every person may have his/her own voice and thoughts and I like yours actually. I have an idea that big channels with their negative comments are looking for viewers in comments on YOUR video. Probably they write negative as it is visible and it turns your viewers to watch their channel instead of yours. Anyhow, haters gonna hate all the time, and let them go. As a plus, they give you additional activities in the comments which may also boost your video further. Take care and feel good. You do a good job.

It is truly tough when you get a ton of comments and more so when you want to dedicate time to them, but it shows you’re real. I had one video explode in views and I feel like I didn’t know what to do with that. Doubling down would’ve probably been what someone else would’ve recommended but I already had a path on what content I was doing/needed to do so it felt wrong to try to shift gears at that moment. I kinda regret not trying but I also have faith in my content so I’ll keep going and being consistent with what I do. As for the negativity, there’s always going to be people like that. It’s always funny that those same people would take the time to comment/view if they didn’t like the video/topic. But you know how to handle that so no worries there. I did have a slight mental breakdown once when I saw a comment where the person said they didn’t understand the direction of my channel (something like that) and I have established myself in my space quite well but I know I have to branch out a bit in order to grow so that comment really put me down, but I bounced back! And as a final thought, just my unprofessional analysis on the title vs thumbnail situation, maybe for bigger channels there can be a heavier emphasis on the thumbnail since they no longer have to worry too much about search based content so they just want to stand out and get attention from new viewers. They already have an audience who knows their face so that part is easy but then you have to get the attention of so many others who don’t know you, so you gotta “pop” you know? Small YouTubers have to make titles that are more searchable and start getting the initial traction while they’re more unknown so they focus a lot on that, not to mention we don’t really understand thumbnails (yes I am still bad at thumbnails lol). So yeah, just my thoughts. Keep up the great work and hope you keep growing!

5 месяцев назад
@KevinChee
@KevinChee

I think your analysis is spot on and I am going through what you went through now. Leveraging on the viral video can be difficult and put pressure on us but at the end of the day, we just need to decide on our route and move on. Bigger channels leverage on thumbnail for sure. MrBeast for example, can have any title he wants as long as his face is in the thumbnail. However, what I don’t agree with is how big channels try to enforce thumbnail being everything on small channels. Small channels just isn’t at that stage and we need different methods to make ourselves known. Perhaps they have been big for too long and they forgot what it is like to be small. I’m not a big channel so I can’t comment much, maybe I will find out when my channel gets bigger.

I have to agree, sometimes it really upsets reading so many negative comments and even insults , getting really personal which has nothing to do with the video or channel niche. For the most part i can handle it, but when you have a bad day and get 10 negative comments it is really a bad feeling . I like it however that youtube doesnt block them but you can make them invisible. They will write and noone will see. Many other people even stop doing content when getting such trolls. Going viral also means getting a lot of those people who noone actually wants on that platform. Especially with youtube shorts , they are even much more disrespectful and full of hate. Great video 👍

@To-To +7
@To-To

From my experience, 6% CTR and around 40% retention is what YouTube pushes, though the retention does vary a bit depending on the length of the video. 40% of a 10 minutes may not seem like a lot, but you kept people on the platform for around 5 minutes. That's significantly longer than someone who makes shorter videos, so it's more than you think. That said, it's better to have a higher CTR and retention because, as the video gains more traction, YouTube is going to push it to more audiences. Having a higher CTR -- and retention to an extent -- will allow them to be more experimental before your video dies. If you have a lower CTR at around 6%, it's a higher likelihood that the video dies before reaching its proper audience or, if it already did, it dies without getting more traction than it already did because YT pushed it to the wrong audience, caused the CTR to dip, and then they dropped the video. I'm not an educational "grow your channel" type of channel, but I do like studying data and graphs and this is just what I've gathered over the time I've done it so far.

6 месяцев назад
@KevinChee +2
@KevinChee

So, if the CTR starts off at say, 20%, YouTube might try pushing it to a larger audience to see if the CTR is maintained. If it does, it gives the video even more impressions till is starts dwindling down to a much lower CTR %? That definitely make sense. CTR is bound to drop as the video gets pushed out. I guess channels like MrBeast is able to maintain that CTR even with millions of impressions.

In terms of views, yes, the breakout video of mine boost my confidence but the follow up video (this one) was a little tough for me to create. I had a lot of pressure creating this because I don't know what can happen or if I am able to live up to the hype. But in the end, I did what I can and this video is getting over 2k views, which is still a lot more than my typical 100-200 views, and I'm glad! My target has always been views = 10% of sub count, I think most big channels get views around that % as well. So 2k view is a good number to me. As for the comments, well.. you can see I don't really focus much on them here, they are not worth by time :)

Hi Kevin, my channel has followed a very similar pattern to yours. I was having slow and steady growth and then one of my videos caught fire and pulled the rest of my channel along with it. Up until then I had so few negative comments that I really didn’t pay attention to them. However when my channel started really taking off, I found that amongst all the positive comments, I started to receive a steady, but small amount of negative ones. Everything from correcting my cutting techniques to disliking the way I eat 😅. It’s very easy to be disheartened by this, even though the number of bad comments is in reality very few. However, I always take it as a compliment as before my channel started to accelerate, I would say that the reason I got hardly any negative comments was because so few people were actually watching. As I’m sure you’re aware, social media is a complete mix of people, and a small but vocal minority of them seem to exist just to try to bring others down. The bigger channels that have a pop at you must see you as some sort of threat because if you were insignificant, you wouldn’t even be on their radar. I would take that as a big compliment. My ethos is - if you don’t have any trolls, then nobody’s watching. So in our cases, we must be doing something right. Keep doing what you are doing. This YouTube journey can be a lonely one, so we need to have each other’s backs. Best wishes Michael 👍💪❤️

6 месяцев назад
@KevinChee +1
@KevinChee

You're right Michael. But I can't see myself doing that to small channels if I am that big channel, you know what I mean? Giving constructive criticism is ok but it needs to stick to the point. Commenting about editing, accent, the way you eat, that has nothing to do with the message in the video. If I don't enjoy the video, I move on. However, as you said, that's the world of social media, nothing we can do about it. So, we just keep creating :)

6 месяцев назад
@ChowWithLau
@ChowWithLau

@@KevinChee No, if I grew to be a big channel, then I wouldn’t treat smaller ones like that either. Goes to show that having a big channel doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re a good person. Some people will always try to knock you down and often there’s no logic or reason for it. As creators there’s not a lot we can do about it except reminding ourselves that the vast majority of people are positive and to keep creating. Being a person who has any kind of audience exposes that person to contact that wouldn’t happen to anyone else. It’s one of the unexpected things that nobody tells us about when starting a YouTube channel. Stay strong, buddy.

Congrats on the recent success, there are few feelings better than the first few days after getting blessed by the algorithm. My 2 cents from being a total youtube data nerd is that your CTR was the leading contributor to that video doing so well. 8% may not seem much higher than your other videos but there are hidden types of CTR (CTR of new viewers and CTR of returning viewers) both play a role and I'd argue the first is a big factor in view curves like you are seeing. Youtube starts casting a wider net with your impressions and if you maintain or even gain CTR when its pushed to new viewers, this will mean very very good things for you! That first video popped up on my feed and I admit I clicked on it as a new viewer, it was a great thumbnail/title. Also, as someone who gives too much mental energy to the 2% of negative nancies in my comments when I should be focusing on the 98, I totally get it and it can be frustrating to deal with but keep you head high and be proud of the success you're bringing in! Will be watching over the next few weeks to see how you channel continues to grow. When I get a negative comment I ask myself if there's something to learn from their criticism or if its just empty hate. If its the latter it does me no good to spend another second thinking about it.

Thank you. Really encouraging to get feedback from someone with experience. Very interesting point on the hidden types of CTR, I knew there were new and returning viewers but I never would've thought they each represent a different CTR (which makes a lot of sense now that I think about it). As for criticism, I tend to see if it gives me a new perspective first. There are actually more negative comments than the ones I showed in this video but I did not include those because, even though they do name callings, they do make a point and made me think. In your opinion, what CTR should small channels like ours be aiming for?

6 месяцев назад
@Ravlol
@Ravlol

CTR differs so widely between size, niche, and audience so its hard to gauge so all I can do is provide you with some of my stats. My 1/10 videos typically start with a CTR of > 22%. This seems extremely high but it gets published to my subs and return viewers first so youtube wants to see that they are coming back first so 20% is my goal. Then as time goes on days/weeks I aim to keep it above 10%. Anything less at this point is a flop unfortunately. Youtube is ranking your performance against not only other channels but also your own channels previous performance so if I normally start a vid with 20% CTR in first 3 hours. Even if I do 14% which is good, youtube will compare it to my average and promote it less. My most successful video ever on a different channel (3-4 mil views) sat at 17% for years, its a unicorn but if you can keep a >12-13% across days or weeks as youtube promotes it to wider and wider audiences, you'll have a very successful video@@KevinChee

Majority of them are constructive criticism. Its unfortunate that the minority can cause us such huge distress. But don't let them get to you, there's always the option to hide the user so that they will never come back.

Hey Kevin, new sub here. I like what you said esp at the end, be sure to thank them. I rarely get any comment but yea I did get a negative one some time ago and I felt grateful even tho the person said things harshly. Just grateful someone watched my video and cared enough to comment even tho it's not a positive comment. It's good enough. But I have seen many small channels who engage in comment for comment, meaning they will watch and then comment, then the creator of that video will give back by watching the commenter's video and comment. I've been looking at these accounts out of curiosity, for my own understanding. You'd know who's doing the comment for comment - the video will get like 80 views but the comments are 100 (comment and replies). There is no way this actually happens to small creators. I noted that even with such high comments vs low views, the video itself did not get pushed out more and the overall account still grows very slowly. So maybe comments and like are not as important to the algorithm as we originally think it is. Btw, I watched the video that blew up not because of the thumbnail, but the title. I definitely think the thumbnail doesn't really matter as I've seen too many videos that the thumbnails did nothing but got many views. The title resonated with me because I believe that too, so when I saw your video, I had to watch it just to see what you had to say. Only time thumbnails are important is when someone uses it with intention to just get anyone to click - the creator posing half nude or strategically nude (usually a woman creator, unfortunately). I've seen too many of this and it's such a disgusting tactic.

That is spot. I know a channel who is part of a group and they do exactly what you said, engage in every video and comment. I find that strategy to be too time consuming and pointless. The ones who agrees to do it are only there for a reason and not for what my video has to offer, they will never be my target audience. And at some point, they will simply leave and never come back. This is quite common for channels below 1k and they do it out of support for one another. I can understand where they are coming from and that support can do wonders but they need to be careful not to rely too much on this. There's a new thumbnail circling on YouTube these days. It is a black background, with just words on it and a big red circle. I am starting to see a few channels copying that and they are gaining traction. It is just a trend, it will fade away, but some do capitalize on that timed thumbnail. But that being said, it just goes to show a thumbnail don't mean much until the creator gives meaning to it.

@@KevinChee definitely for sure, it's time consuming. And some will say I've come from so and so's page...i subscribed to you because of this person. They are not there because they like or found value in my content. When you don't subscribe to their channel immediately, the next day, you see that they have unsubscribed from your channel. It's good this way because it doesn't do any good to one's channel in the long run. Anyway, nice hearing from you, thank you and have a good week ahead.

No matter what you've done, you've done it right, and as you see it, consistency pays off. I begrudge you, from the bottom of my heart, that your channel has now got a snowball effect. I wish the same my channel, but as you said, every channel is different, the viewers and probably other things play an individual role for each Channel. I'm struggling with geting more reach and impressions , and your video has motivated me to keep going, so thanks ❤❤❤

The snowball effect is great, but, it takes a lot of patience and consistency. I waited 3 years for this to happen and during this 3 years, it was tough mentally and I burnt out several times. But, that consistency not only keeps your channel alive, but it also builds up a portfolio of videos overtime. You have already hit your first goal 1k (not sure if you're monetized) but just remember to set goals at every stage you go.

Thank you, Kevin, for another top video. I dont understand the youtube algorithm. 2 recent shorts i posted had great numbers. Short 1, shown in feed 4.1k, 68% choose to view 73% retention. Short 2, shown in feed, 4.2k, choose to view, 40.3%, retention is not yet available. Both videos started slow, then ramped up in 2 hours. Then nothing

No one understands Shorts. The only way to increase your chances is to pump as many Shorts as possible. I feel it has the same concept as Reels and TikTok.

I found your channel from your last video and I really enjoyed it. I've never even watched a channel with this type of content so its interesting that YouTube pushed it to me but I am glad they did. I mostly just watch video game stuff or vlog/skits. I'm subscribed here now and looking forward to see what else you do! So far both videos I've watched were great and you are very easy to understand. Keep it up!

Hey, that's super cool. I wonder too why my video is pushed to viewers such as yourself. Perhaps YouTube secretly knows more about you than you? It is a mystery! Jokes aside, thanks for subscribing and sorry I can't be as funny as video game and vlogs and skits content.
