    Every RUplayers Growth gurus has said that thumbnail and video quality is everything in growing a RUplayers channel. They say that it increases your analytics which in return, pushes your video into the RUplayers algorithm.
    I decided to test this out to end the debate.

For me as a creator on another username, it was the thumbnail also but only because the word “thumbnail” was in it. Then I read the title but I had to read it twice. The word “STOP!” Kind of confused me. I did however feel the video could have provided some value from a different perspective, and it did. I was then (while watching) able to compare the information against my own results.

The timing part is so true honestly. Someone I edit for released a video and it got a few hundred views ( Which isn't bad for him ) but we found out he made a mistake in the video so we had to pull it down and make some changes to it, and when we reuploaded it ( same title, same thumbnail ) for some reason it just blew up and the second time around it has a thousand views. We still do not know why if I'm being honest about it. Also seeing someone else with an audience retention around 30% makes me feel good. All the other channel people always have those 80% retention rates, and I swear I've tried everything I know how to try and I'm constantly doing new things or making adjustments and it seems like no matter what I can't really get a retention rate to go much higher than around 30% and sometimes things just have garbage retention rates. I kind of suspect it's just a side effect of being a smaller channel a much smaller amount of people have to click away to just tank your analytics data.

That’s what I am trying to prove as well, that most of the time YouTubers don’t know why their video gets pushed. Like this video of mine, I don’t know either. But big channels like to claim they know why but I have serious doubts

Just saying you need to test it 5 times or more for each then we can draw conclusions. 1 VS 1 isn't enough data. What if the first video affected the second video after all the channel has a little data at that point and youtube might know better what audience to show the second video to, giving it better metrics. realistically you would want to test the videos on brand-new channels every time. @@KevinChee

6 месяцев назад
@KevinChee
@KevinChee

It is going to be an endless cycle. There will always be multiple metrics to consider because YouTube is dynamic. We can only test and make decision using what we have. It may not be 100% accurate, but sometimes, all we need is 70% confidence. I'm sure channel of your size will see things differently since your sample size is a lot bigger. Likewise, MrBeast will claim your sample size is too small because his channel is a lot bigger than yours. There's no end to this, we just have to go with what we have in our channel. Sometimes, thinking too much is what stops the channel from progressing. Let's just agree to disagree because I feel like sushi now thanks to your profile picture.

YouTube success is about making the right content at the right time. You can make an incredible video but it won’t get views if no one cares about the topic. I think YouTube can be predicted but what's hard to predict is timing. For instance, in 2020 during the pandemic, YouTube growth channels exploded because they had all these how-to videos created pre-pandemic. @KevinChee
@KevinChee

If I can be honest with you, your style of video is something that I would say require very heavily editing. I watched 1 of your videos on Raging Bull, I think you have the content but the delivery can be improved. Viewers actually do not like reading on YouTube, they like to be told a story. So, if you want to use text, you will need to break it down into, max, 5 words and have some text animation for text changes. The background also needs to be relevant, say, clips from Raging Bull. Try watching motivational videos, they do well when it comes to these sort of style. Research their text fonts, colours, text animations, background clips and music. Once you get that, then learn the art of creating thumbnails and titles.

I enjoy your videos, definitely found through the Nate Black connection. I’ll watch again and consider your conclusions. What I see is that every creator wants views and community but rarely engages with those viewers, doesn’t ever watch their channels out of curiosity or leave genuine comments. Something other than “nice share”. I don’t have a big channel but I have gotten to know subscribers, I read all their comments and respond, I’m there for them when they have experienced a loss, I rejoice when they have good news, I share their videos. That is what I use this channel for. I have several other channels and I have to say the ones made for the LCD do very well- it’s the equivalent of writing Stephen King schlock by formula and crafting a play with unique intelligent characters and imaginative situations.

I'm sure your channel will do well if that's how you manage your channels. I respond to every comment I can (as long as they appear in my YouTube analytics) because if viewers are taking their time to leave me a comment then the least I can do is respond the best I can. My comments are still manageable at the moment, I'm not sure if I can do the same once I get 100s of comments a day though. Having said that, I do find viewers are returning because I am interacting with them in the comments at a human level.

@KevinChee

Absolutely. The content is what makes viewers subscribe to the channel. However, the first step will always be thumbnail (to stop viewers scrolling), followed by title (to get viewers clicking) then the content itself (to get the sub). The toughest to me is the thumbnail because creativity is subjective, everyone has their own opinion on what makes a good thumbnail

6 месяцев назад
@WatchMysh
@WatchMysh

@@KevinCheeOf course that's subjective but luckily there are basic design principles that are just pleasing to the human brain (golden ratio, certain color combos, etc....). So if your thumbnail reaches a certain quality level, it doesn't matter whether the person viewing it likes purple or green better. If the basic composition is alright, the content of the thumb can shine. It needs to focus on the most important part: spark curiosity. Your test thumb was great, because more or less famous persons quitting sth always sparks interest and the word "quit" is also loved by the algorithm. It creates drama and controversy. That's what social media algos love because it leads to lots of user engagement and discusions.

Hey Kevin, I am a YouTube growth specialist and I'll share my findings- 1. Both Thumbnail & Title are important - - We call it packaging. They should together implement the hook and complement each other. - Focus most on the psychological impact: The thumbnail should have a curiosity loop or an action that would compel a viewer to stop and take a closer look and read the title which would further motivate the viewer to click - Thumbnails are 90% psychology and 10% design, so getting work done by a graphic designer won't get you a higher ctr. You need someone (maybe you) to think of "why would someone click it", "Does it have any psychological factor" and then direct a graphic designer to create that 2. AVD is dependent on overall video structure which can be improved through better script, video editing and implementing storytelling techniques. Just adding fancy visuals in your video without any context won't just increase your AVD. TLDR is you are the director and carrying the vision! It's your job your vision is met when a graphic designer or video editor works on your video. They just know how to execute it as they are more aware of the tools

I don't think I said to ignore thumbnails, they go hand-in-hand but I would give priority to title over thumbnails. I liked your approach Kevin bro. I monitor and watch a lot of new youtube channels every week in the Newtuber discord server. At this point, I have gone through over 100 thumbnails and videos in order to provide feedback. One thing that caught me was a lot of these videos indeed had high effort. It seemed like how in the world is there no audience for these videos? Lots of people were pointing out that thumb was bad. However, the most common problem in all of these videos were the topics. It seems like Youtube takes years and years to actually find viewers for a video. This means you are forced to create those content that will staright sent to the current audience withing first contact or else wait eternity to get your audience building up. Recently, one of the person uploaded a video about this exact topic that YT pushes new channels content to random, irrelevant audience and this impact the new channels to die sooner. I'm sure this video got to most of the people feed. It's thumbnail is literally white text on black bsckground captioned "This video belongs here", something like that. Indeed topic of the video that appeals to the broadest audience possible is the major factor. Thumbnail just need to be relavent and not crappy that viewers cannot decipher it. Video itself need to have relevant content, but not need to be super edited or perfectly made. Youtube is all about broad-audience appeal now, and if your channels don't fit within that group then it's will not see the light of the day soon. If you guys wanna talk about this topic more either you can join that server and ping me, or my discord has the same user id as my name here. - clatzeo

If you are just getting started, the first few videos will tank no matter what, just because as a new youtuber, there's so much we still don't know, like camera setup, lighting, thumbnails, titles. So, it is normal to not get subs. But, instead of focusing on subs, try and focus on learning the art of content creation. I can see at a glance your thumbnails and title can be improved. Remove the #, they don't help on YT. Then, research your competitor and see what video worked for them, learn their thumbnail and title then use it as your starting point. That is by far, the quickest way to grow as a content creator on YT.

I enjoy watching people's advice or in general, Get an Idea that inspires myself to continue content creating. (Although this has changed now) But I think some of the Requirements that YouTube provides to an individual or Small Content Creator that is building up difficult. But the honest truth, there really is no secret or anything fancy you need to create or upload a video. Video Editing is nice to help you support your image or brand. As well viewer retention. A Creative Thumbnail & Video Quality doesn't necessarily "NEED" to be a thing... But it does help your Content pop out more & People enjoy watching 60fps or Smooth consistent gameplay. High Quality Equipment to support your channel and to be honest, It is difficult. But in my opinion it is a waiting game. You Upload a video, Be proud of it. Hey Kevin! I'm a part-time youtuber and a youtube strategist behind the scenes (i've been doing this for 2 years and I've earned well over 6 figures doing so,) so for the most part I would call myself experienced and wanted to give some creative criticism! Good Packaging and Video Quality are the MOST IMPORTANT things as a creator. That's not debatable at all. But I do agree with you in a lot of areas. However, what a lot of people don't understand is that to have a good video, you need a good idea. To have a good idea, you need good planning. To have good planning, you need to have good direction. In that same sense, to have a good thumbnail, you have to have a good idea, and again to have that good idea, you need to have good planning. So It ALL connects. To say you need a good video means you need good everything. Which is as true as it will get. Those with the best content, and the best strategy, and the best videos will always outperform those who lack in any of those areas. And that's not saying you CANT go anywhere. Anyone can go anywhere with anything. But to consistently be pushed is very different than to get one video to do well! Great video, and I look forward to watching more of your videos in the future.

ah, you're putting too much pressure on me. From my experience in listening to other gurus out there, the whole 'high-quality' term is really hard to understand. What's high quality to me may not be for you. For example, I don't enjoy MrBeast videos so I don't follow his style but no one will be on my side because his videos are pretty much the standard for YouTubers now. Would you say this video of mine has lots of editing done right? I wouldn't say so compared to others out there that has tons of editing every 5 seconds with different B-rolls and angles. But here I am in the comment section, hearing viewers saying the editing is good. The best we can do as content creator is really produce the best we can and to our liking, because we can never know what everyone wants.

6 месяцев назад
@BronzMinecraft +1
@BronzMinecraft

@@KevinChee @KevinChee I completely agree with this statement! At the end of the day, some people will like your content, some won't. For me personally, I make content I would personally watch. As such, I have a rough idea of what a viewer I am targeting would want. The best thing you can really do as a creator is to make videos. As ironic as it sounds, over time you're going to improve from simply posting. Then you also have more data to work with. As far as how a "good video" is determined is through your audience. If your audience likes your video, that's all that matters. The only issue that rises there, however is that that mindset locks them into a cycle of appealing only to those in their audience rather than finding a new one. But generally, its easier to just post videos you're happy with and improve with stats than it is to stress over quality and not even post. So again, I agree with you, I thought I would just give a bit of my personal opinion. Your video was indeed great :)

Good video. I felt like the conclusion is still thumbnail title, but our interpretation of what is good may differ. But it's true that the one that gets the emotional response will tend to do better. Not about the quality, which is one of this video's topics, but the title and thumbnail alone left me intrigued, sad and disappointed with what the guy did. It has, as of now, 17k views probably because of the thumbnail highlighted a setence "It has to D!E", since he talked about his opinions of Sonic Superstars and telling why side-scrolling games for this franchise will not exist forever. All of this resulted in me unsubscribing the channel and not buying the game anymore because, as much as I respect opinions, no matter how toxic the Sonic community is, some of them end up hurting me inside. @@pejmanEntertainment try and find what's happening now and see if you can make it relatable to your content. That 10% is just a benchmark for me, if you want to compare, I'd say compare it to your own video that outperformed. Comparing subs with other channels doesn't justify the quality of your content. That being said, I compare to sometimes. hey Kevin, I think that is a good analysis of what happened. Thumbnail wise: the algo knows what's in the thumbnail (don't think facial recognition), just to determine the topic of the video. I don't think it will make the video rank like you said (just like keywords don't make you rank), it will rank because viewers click on the thumbnail that it will rank Another question. I noticed that the audience retention graph of the outsourced video is flatter. Is that normal for you on your channel (not on mine at least). I can help you with the high drop off in the beginning. Shoot me a message if you are interested

Hey Dexxter. The outsourced video is much flatter because it has less views, which is expected. But overall, my videos hovers around the high 30s to low 40s mark. I don't pay that much attention to it these days because it is so random. Videos that are performing well have lower %. I think there are too many things playing at hands here, which makes it hard to find an absolute answer. I am trying to focus more on my editing in the first 1 minute these days. I flicked down and you have been heroic replying to so many comments! something the experts never admit is that there are many successful videos with thumbnails, editing, retention that follow none of their expert reasoning and must do advice. I have been on Youtube all day, and it must have been pushed in my browser every time I flicked through. Even though I ignored it maybe 10 times, youtube kept putting it there, until eventually, I clicked on it just to make it go away! But enjoyed the video, which must be why youtube so heavily put it in front of me. I do feel Youtube force feeds you content it is getting good signals from.

I want to give you lots of feedback on why I watched the video, all of it! First I want to say well done with the video, you had some great ingredients, and you have a lovely likability factor, I hope the channel really kicks on for you on the back of this videos success, looking at your channel you have been persevering for a while. There’s nothing more beautiful than someone breaking out after so much dedication, you deserve the success. But yeah the algorithm forces you to watch some videos right..? If it wants me to watch a video it will keep putting it on my home page, almost until I watch it. I thought with yours ‘oh no not another video advising small Youtubers, I’ve watched thousands’ so I kept ignoring it, but Youtube kept putting it there, It must have given it double figure impressions on my home page, I nearly clicked the 3 buttons to say ‘I’m not interested’. Crazily, I was briefly watched a live stream yesterday from channel makers and they were demonstrating a helpful exercise of going through your homepage and studying thumbnails, and your video appears on the screen! I was like oh there’s that video again! (It’s like a big matrix circle as you mentioned channel makers in your video! You can watch it on their channel, from yesterday, at around 10 mins). But the final act of the story is I DID click, and I’m really glad I did. I watched it all, and did not skip any. I think it’s an example of when the algorithm has faith you will engage with a video, like it KNOWS you. As a watcher, I really felt I was going to get value, you were answering questions that as a small YouTube myself, are there at the back of my head. You played on the idea that I don’t believe and trust experts, that I have lost faith in them, and you were a ‘fallible common man’ confirming my suspicions, and I was hooked to follow the experiment, wanting to have my thoughts confirmed. Psychological myth busting is really powerful for retention. Plus there was value that small youtubers are always thinking is it worth paying people on Fiverr to edit videos and design thumbnails, I want to see that this is also a kind of lie and a scam. And finally you were offering something different, and telling a new story, going against common beliefs and expert advice. So well done, Youtube was right to push it heavily on to me. Well played sir, good luck in your Youtube journey.@@KevinChee

I really enjoyed this, I do my own editing and audio along with the thumbnail, its a lot of work and I even considered maybe using fivrr but its been tough with little to no funds. When gaining some success on work done by self its very rewarding, but I often questioned what made one video outshine the others as my channel fluctuates. Then again mine is just asmr role playing, but this was definitely informative especially the fact that you used another youtubers image and possibly mentioning of their name may trigger a sorta of a gacha effect in the algorithm. A great way of finding out by testing it more of its effective usage.

@KevinChee

The whole outsourcing idea has been at the back of my head for a long time. I'm always questioning why my videos aren't taking off and the thumbnail and video quality is one of those that I feel are the culprit. And to verify that, I really need to test it out and I'm glad I did because turns out, it was never that and that eliminates 2 big possibilities.

Titles, thumbnails, and video quality all matter, but what you've just described is the fact that the aesthetics of the video don't matter as much as the actual subject matter. Thumbnails and editing styles are just a part of the aesthetic, which are more important in terms of making your channel look clean and stand out.

6 месяцев назад
@KevinChee
@KevinChee

well, the subject matter is where the value is, and I'm sure lots of channels provide value as well. But people do fall for the aesthetic I would say, just like a luxury bag vs a non-luxury bad. However, for YT videos, I reckon it works more like news headline. The thumbnail is there to grab attention but the title makes you curious and subsequently makes you click.
