I just wanted to thank you for making this video, I followed your guide and was able to successfully replace both rear bearings, the drivers side being the most critical. A good informative video , but I do have a couple of constructive criticisms, 1 please put the axle stands under your car properly , the way you had them , facing from back to front , if the jack gives way the car will drop onto the axle stands and they will slip sideways on the rear arms and the car will fall.safety first 2 please don't use a screwdriver as a chisel/punch its a good way to hurt yourself .chisels and punches are designed for a certain job 👍 Apart from that you did a good job , and I am very impressed with the bearing puller kit

Hi Mike, do you think there is a way to take the wheel hub off without damaging the bearing? The reason is that I need to change the protection shield and it doesn't fit over the hub.
Год назад
Mike's Garage
Hi Nilsfried, this is possible to do. When you will hammer out hub it will come out with inner race of the bearing. You don't need to remove it from the hub. When you will finish with back plate, you will need to press the hub in with inner race together, the main thing that no rust or other things get in inside the bearing. When you will installed it back need to be careful so hub doesn't go sideways. I done it to. And bearing still working good. Good luck to you, if you will decide to do this!

Hi, excellent how-to. One question on the socket used for getting the nut off the axle: you mention 30mm socket, but my car has more edges than hex, and BMW part catalog says its 40mm. E46 320i, M54B22. So my question is what type and size of nut have you used? Thanks in advance!

Hi, I used 30mm socket. Sometimes aftermarket parts could have a different sizes. This is how my socket looks like: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01LZEGFON/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_LDhoEbTDBAHMY

Tip for some, make sure it's a 12point socket for the axel nut. And if your bearing is really bad. The inner bearing race may get stuck to your hub and you're better off just ordering a new hub, as it's damn near impossible to get the race off

You need to remove wheel hub, then parking brake shoes and then remove 10 mm bolts which hold the back plate. Bearing it self you don't need to remove, but when you will removing wheel hub half of the bearing will come out with hub. That's why better to replace bearing same time.

Hi Mike, do you think there is a way to take the wheel hub off without damaging the bearing? The reason is that I need to change the protection shield and it doesn't fit over the hub.
Год назадMike's Garage

They all seem to be that way. If you have a helper, have them hold the socket on the nut. If not, I have wedged a cold chisel under the socket to keep it from dropping down.

Tip for some, make sure it's a 12point socket for the axel nut. And if your bearing is really bad. The inner bearing race may get stuck to your hub and you're better off just ordering a new hub, as it's damn near impossible to get the race off

great video but please use axle stands correctly, Jack up the car, Place axle stands underneath your jacking points and lower car down onto them. No your bearing should be fine. You need to put smaller plate right behind the other side of the bearing and then press the hub in. You separate the bearing, if you wil do what I say it will come back.

You need to remove wheel hub, then parking brake shoes and then remove 10 mm bolts which hold the back plate. Bearing it self you don't need to remove, but when you will removing wheel hub half of the bearing will come out with hub. That's why better to replace bearing same time.
