There are many extraordinary examples of design in the microbial world. In this chapter, two examples are given: the bacterial flagella and the production of a blood red pigment in Serratia marcescens. The molecular machinery of the bacterial flagella is magnificent. The amazing ability for Serratia marcescens, a rod-shaped bacterium, to produce a pigment that resembles blood is “miraculous.” Powerful Answers to Difficult Questions Each color-illustrated guide is packed with biblical and scientific answers to tough questions facing today’s culture. LEARN MORE! Bacterial Flagella—Icon of the Intelligent Design Movement We begin with Michael Behe who made the bacterial flagellum a popular argument for intelligent design in Darwin’s Black Box, using them to illustrate the concept of irreducible complexity. The flagellum is a corkscrew-shaped, hair-like appendage attached to the cell surface acting like a propeller, allowing the bacterium to swim.

@Devin Strait Yes you could argue that 4.6 billion years is not enough time for all of this 'functionality' to arise randomly, however it is an error to invent a god to explain it. It remains an unanswered question until we learn more. All scripture has been written by man.

I agree. Also here in NZ more than 60% of us are not religious. Nobody really cares whether you're religious or not. It's been years since Jahovahs have been knocking on doors as they will get abuse if they do. It's OK to be religious, just don't come to my house and push it on me, that's rude. If someone decides to go to church one day, good for them.

I had an experience years ago that had me scratching my head. I knew a young fellow who was a Seventh Day Adventist. He was absolutely staunch. He believed in God and the bible. I asked him about "what about dinosaurs and the evidence of fossils that went back millions of years". His answer, and I quote. "The devil littered the world with those things to confuse us into believing there was something other than God and the creation of man by God." So even physical proof didn't phase him. When you have people like that in the world, they make up stories to prove their beliefs.

I have actually heard this argument numerous times throughout my life so far... My response to this would be and has been: "So, you acknowledge that humans have a history of making up false Gods and religions, yes? Because for your God to be true, every other religion and God that exists or has ever existed has to be wrong. Literally thousands of Gods and religions, all wrong, made up mythologies. If we have historically created so many false Gods and religions, statistically, yours has an almost 100% chance of also being false. So why should I believe you without sufficient scientific evidence your God does exist?" Every time I have stated this in a debate with religious people, they left or withdrew from the discussion. Essentially admitting defeat. I mean, it's a no-brainer really...
24 дня назад
LovesBerk
@The Voice Within Oh yes they do for sure. I read a brilliant book years ago and it makes a lot of sense to me. It's called "The Source" and it was written by James A Mitchener. The story is that there are archeologists to go to the middle east and they dig through tons of earth on a what they call a "Tell" which a mound of earth where people have built cities on top of cities. They find several different cities and he fleshes it out with stories of the inhabitants. So they finally get to the very bottom where they find a small statue that is supposed to represent a nature god who is supposed to be responsible for good and bad crops. There was no such thing but they wanted to thank someone who made it possible for them to have a good harvest. It's a really interesting read. So yes, I do think that gods have been made up but I think it's because we need something other than ourselves so we don't feel so alone and that there is hopefully something beyond the grave. As for Ricky's statement of "I don't know" as opposed to do you believe in God or not being nonsense. I don't agree. There are a lot of people on the fence who can't make up their mind one way or another because people can make an argument for or against. If you are on the fence, it means you an agnostic. I am one such person. I would like to think there is something beyond the grave but obviously won't know till we get to that stage. Sorry for the long story.

My cat died a few weeks ago and ive never been bothered before about anyone dying but christ when that kitten died i wanted so badlly to believe they werent dead. I more wanted to believe in a time machine than heaven but damn it would have been nice for her to not have just been a cold stiff bit of meat sitting in the fridge not moving and not making her little sounds. Weird ..nobody who died before ever bothered me but that cat will never not be a pain innmy hesrt. She was so bloody amazing. Every time i saw her i said ong youre the best cat in the world. And then she went out for a wee like always and didnt come back in like always. Could be anyone. Will be everyone. But i wont be bothered for the most part. I can imagine that in the old days when somones kid died peopke made up the story to make them stop crying for days on end... and then just all said yes yes we all believe that too...and slowly it just became a habit...like santaclause and the man on the bus who will throw you off if you dont stop kicking the seat. And we will probably never not have a need to make up a stoty to stop somone crying and wailing and not eating because theyre so upset. How could you go on if your dear beloeved child stopped breathing and you had other kids to comfort and had to keep lpiughing the feilds. .youd just collapse without some of these stories i think.

Love Ricky more each day, everything about his approach to so many things, the way he can find humor in anything. I find that the similarities in my own thought process are so similar to Ricky's. Injustice and ignorance, two of the worst things to have to endure from the corrupt, greedy and stupid. I would have to say that the Count of Monte Cristo is a favorite movie, injustice made right or at least partially righted. I got "disrespect to authority" on a report card as a kid, knowing how ignorant and uneducated so many in authority were. They say when you get older you realize how smart your parents were, which is true, as I realize how much they did not know. When debating father I felt like I was sparing with an unarmed man. Some think outside the box, while others say, "what box?"

Ricky is brilliant at articulating his opinion on religion, which I really appreciate , respect and connect with.

don't let Ricky confuse you. I don't think he actually knows what agnosticism means. I even think he does not know that atheism and agnosticism are compatible. exemplaric in his BS question: "do you believe in god?" It's not conflicting to say No and still be an agnostic. You could just like trick him into a similar question to be an agnostic: "do you think there is some kind of entity beyond our limits of knowledge?". If he says no he's an Idiot in his own words because that's the foundation of science to not claim knowledge of something we can't know. And thats agnostisicm.

I questioned my dad about there being a heaven and hell when i was a very young child, his answer to me and my five sisters was that we create our own heaven and hell right here on earth which i believe is right and true. I am not a believer of any gods but believe that there was a man called jesus who was put to death and crucified because he was brought up to believe that he was the son of god. I believe that jesus was a good kind man who had morals and principles and tried his best to bring out the best in people, but being told he was the son of christ was his downfall. We can achieve many good things in life by being kind to ourselves and others therefore there is no need for any religions and mythical gods to rule our lives and that of others.

Labels are annoying indeed. I'm a lifelong Christian, I got my struggles, my mistakes, my journey. Not everyone believes in God, but I question my own existence - less to do with my personal faith, more to do with my presence here on earth. The relationship between man and the world is faith, between each other is faith, for that better tomorrow... also faith. Valuing life's greatness is something we all, technically have in common, and that's something. Kudos to you Ricky Gervais for all your gifts and your timeless, priceless humor and satire. 🥲😄😎
23 дня назад
Hit Man
You look like an intelligent person so i would love you to answer two questions for me: 1) Why value faith? You can believe literally everything based on faith it is no way to the truth. 2) Your best rational reason why the Christian god should be more real than all the countless other gods we humans invented?
23 дня назад
Zachary Manson
@Hit Man 1. Happiness. There are things that bring joy to not just you or me, but that person there, and here... and across the globe. Conversely, pain. Some things are forever, some things we can believe. 2. It's not like that. Christian God? More real? Invented? It's in your path. It's what makes you get up in the morning. The same things make those people go to church on Sunday, perhaps some other family will spend that day to create a memory that will be cherished forever. Summary: We are here today because of all of our combined faiths, beliefs, struggles, and joy. We didn't just survive, we lived. Proof that we're not mere animals/beasts/mammals/flesh/whathaveyou, but something special. Each one of us. Ricky doesn't dismiss life, but embraces it; I can see that as a gift from God, but if I'm proven wrong someday, I won't discount my beliefs towards that day. That would be a betrayal of all that I've learned to that point. Hopefully that makes as much sense as a person can get into when touching upon a subject as personal as "belief". I don't know you, you don't know me, much less your beliefs. But you responded because you care. I responded because I care. Good stuff, all in all. Also, nihilism doesn't work. Just sayin' 😎

As someone who comes from a Christian background I very much appreciate his humour and his blunt honesty. I am more on the agnostic belief where I won’t deny God exist but I do not like the way churches and religion works, especially Christianity. I prefer a foe dark person, where someone acts tough but has a good heart, rather than some who is foe white where they preach and pretend they are so pure and good but deep down down right awful people. Churches tend to draw in a lot of foe whiten extremest rather than genuine goodness, which is bizarre. If church is really about God, shouldn’t it draw in more good than the bad?

What's crazy for me is the fact that I had an imaginary friend as a child and I was ridiculed and was told to grow up and this friend did not exist. Then soon after that I forced onto me their imaginary friend. They both only exists in my mind bit at least mine didn't hurt people and mine was a companion during dark times (abused). Mine wasn't hateful or spiteful or wiped out all of the human race and animals not on a made up boat with his buddy and his family. I know which one I would rather have in my life but at least now being an Atheist I have removed all of this imaginary friend from my mind and life and I'm so much better for it! I'm a better human being, I for one am not anymore a sexist, racist or homophobic human being and that feels great!!! My mind and my nature finally feels in sync, the human being I was meant to be, just wasted 20 years of my life to get here but it was worth it in the end!!! No more 10 commandments that can be broken by choice as long as you ask for forgiveness then all ok. I now live my life by one rule and one rule only! Do whatever the fuck I want as long as I don't hurt another human being or change the direction of their life journey, it is that simple!

But still, believers ( not dependent of the god they believe in), will tell you in the end “yeeees, you were good and so, but you don’t believe in god, so it was a waste of your time to live a good live, you’ll be in hell anyway…” :) and funny thing is that, like Ricky said, if these believers were born in ancient Egypt, they wouldn’t believe in the “right” god, soooo…. :)

Proof that God exists: The word “month” comes from the Proto-Germanic word for “moon.” Why? Because of the lunar cycle, which takes about a month. The lunar cycle indicates order, so someone has prepared it like this (Allah is the one who prepared it like this). Another orderly thing is that everyday the sun comes from the east in the morning and comes down from the west. This indicates order. Also, the autumn, winter, spring and summer are also something orderly. Allah prepared it like this so that the farmer knows when to plant. The spider-web is the house of the spider, but it's also the weapon of the spider. This web is such a beautiful and intelligent design which indicates the existence of God. Why? Because when looking at the web, one is reminded of the mercy of the Lord. How so? Because he sees how God has prepared for the spider a house (web) which is also a weapon whereby the spider gets his daily bread. The fact that faeces can be used as a fertilizer indicates planning of God. God lets people eat, and their faeces can thereafter be used as a fertilizer to improve the fertility of a plant. It still has a benefit (the faeces). How beautiful is that? Butter, cheese, yogurt and ice cream are all made from milk. This indicates the existence of God. That milk can be used to make butter, cheese, yogurt and ice cream is evidence of God's planning. He created milk in such a way that it can be used to make different things. It shows the wisdom of God. The atheist should ponder and ask himself: Who planned it like this? (that milk can be used to make 4 different things) Allah is the Creator. He's the One. No one can be compared to him. He's very unique. He's the owner of the Torah, Gospel, Psalms and the Qur'an.

@Petyr Kowalski I believe in God and in my life there is an abundance of evidence of God's existence. I also have faith in science and medicine, because of the abundance of evidence in my life that it also has saved my life. I do ask myself why I believe: Because it brings me a bit of comfort and a peace of mind in this world. If the God I love exists, he will love the Ricky Gervais' of the world as much (maybe more, Ricky makes people think) as her poor worshippers. I also like the advice of some famous dead guy.... I always feel that Gervais still struggles with the basics. He gets confused about gnosticism and spirituality. As an Atheist, I needn't bother myself with any of that as they too are based on - or should I say 'rely' on belief. There are always two possibilities. I either know or I don't know. When I don't know, I admit it and when I know, I don't need to believe it. Knowledge makes 'belief' and 'to believe' superfluous.

24 дня назадThe Voice Within +4
I have actually heard this argument numerous times throughout my life so far...
24 дня назадLovesBerk

You could just like trick him into a similar question to be an agnostic: "do you think there is some kind of entity beyond our limits of knowledge?". But you are right, at one time we didn't know what caused lightning, and so we invented the god of lightning.

23 дня назадHit Man
You look like an intelligent person so i would love you to answer two questions for me: 1) Why value faith? You can believe literally everything based on faith it is no way to the truth. 2) Your best rational reason why the Christian god should be more real than all the countless other gods we humans invented?
23 дня назадZachary Manson
@Hit Man 1.

This business of accusing someone of not being open-minded because they don't automatically accept your crazy claim: I say, "Of course I'm open minded. I get to say that because I consider both the possibility that your claim is true and also the possibility that it's false. By that standard, you're only half-open-minded."

I’m grew up in church with Christian parents and grandparents on both sides, my Dad parents less so.

It explains why so many believe despite the evidence against it. I was raised as a Christian and went to Sunday school and it took me until I was about 34 to finally walk away from it, since the belief was embedded and I was also taught to not question it (plus I wanted to believe). Ricky was a lot faster than me ;-)

Worst thing is, in my opinion, that you can be atheist and do the right things, be generous, be kind, live your life on full speed no matter what others say….

I choose to believe in God because if he doesn't exist I'm am not harmed, but if he exists, I may be saved (depending on whether I paid that last hooker or not..😳😂...) I always feel that Gervais still struggles with the basics.
