A key regulator of the process of autophagy is a drop in cellular levels of acetyl CoA, an end product of nutrient metabolism. As one would expect, fasting - the abstention from all nutrients - is a potent inducer of autophagy. This is especially true in mice, which begin to experience autophagy within a few days of fasting. However, critical metabolic differences between mice and humans make it difficult to extrapolate these findings to humans. In this clip, Dr. Guido Kroemer describes the current state of knowledge about the minimum amount of time required for fasting-induced autophagy in humans.

Finished a 72 hour fast Wednesday. (Second one I’ve ever done). I always feel worse on the first day, which I think is more to do with cravings as opposed to actual hunger. Days 2 I woke up full of energy, went crazy clearing out the kitchen cupboards and went to bed that night with my body singing. Day 3 I was much more tired, and fantasising about my first meal later in the day, but it was manageable as I wasn’t having hunger pains. I didn’t weigh before or after, I did it purely to eradicate the inflammation issues that had cropped back up since the first fast at the beginning of 2019. It worked, as I knew it would. My glands went down, knee, ankle, lower back pain all gone. I had also been suffering with acne on my neck, which all disappeared.

I don't know if 16 is the magic number but I will say fasting can help heal your body. The weird thing is longer dry fasting ( I did a few 1 and 2 days of it and 2 four days of it) didn't seem to do much for me. Everyone is different though and needs to experiment and find out what works best for them. For me, long termintermittent fasting has worked the best for me so far.

8 месяцев назад@AngloSaks666 +56
I've experimented with various 'rhythms' of calorie intake over the last few years, also thinking about the type of food I'm taking, also keeping in mind simply ways of getting used to the process (I hit on the idea of using nuts for high calories to get used to small meals, for instance) and it's ended up with me being on OMAD pretty much all the time for about 4 years, a period of one meal every 2 days, gradually getting used to fasting and going from just a couple of days a few times, then 3, then up to 4 or 5 a few times, then 6 a couple of times, then 10 twice, 11 once, then 14 twice, with a month or two at least between each. The key seemed to be getting used to it psychologically, also understanding it (knowing I was feeding myself all the same; also being very aware that getting into the full autophagy and fat burning would be set back to zero if I consumed any food), making sure I was getting the necessary electrolytes for cell function, i.e. sodium, magnesium and potassium, consuming it all the time with water, and just leading normal days that take my mind off of food, that I enjoy, but relaxing. I did it in the summer mainly, and also during holidays, and also while living alone, so that made it much easier. The worst thing is temptation. It's amazing how easy it can get when your body adjusts to it, but the psychological aspect is a big one. I actually would walk past the grocery store nearby all the time and not feel tempted to go in, and even went around the supermarket buying cleaning stuff, but also checking out what best to buy later to finish my fast later, and still not tempted. Results are enlightening. Once fully into it, over the hurdle of the first stages (worst generally is the fourth, I found), better mood, more energy, sharper thinking, better sleep, incredible weight loss (about 4kg per week once properly into it). I lost more than 15kg with this approach. Though, it's true, it made me more relaxed about eating between fasts, so I could have kept more weight off (slow creep sometimes, especially over Christmas). It's true also that doing it with others around, and doing it while working makes it a lot harder. I did it during breaks, long weekends, holidays, and generally alone, keeping the apartment clear of food, of course. I also should add that this developed out of a combination of health problems I was having, plus weight gain, so developed over time and experimentation, so doing it suddenly is maybe not doable. Also I had experimented a lot with low carbs and ketogenic diets, so had gotten used to being in ketosis too, so that maybe made fasting easier for me as well. Also, the fact that I had these reasons and did this experimentation, taking it quite far, is kind of out of some level of desperation, and I can't be sure that the more extreme things I did, the fasts of 10 days and more, etc., do not have some harmful effect, at least in the long term. Short term benefits, weight loss, fine, but I'm still not sure that there might not turn out to be good reason to not take it as far as I did, so 'beware', I'm no expert. Learn about it. Stuff on the channel 'what i've learned' helped a lot in understanding the processes. I think there's more for me to learn, for example what better to eat in the days before it, and how best to come out of it.

8 месяцев назад@brucewayne5221 +124
I think it depends on many things besides just the time in the fasting state. You have to take in to consideration lots of variables such as activity levels (exercise or stagnant), what was consumed prior to beginning the fast (carb heavy or not), environment itself (temperature in particular, causing more or less metabolism to cool or heat the body), stress (heavy stress vs relaxed state)... etc. With that being said, there will never be an exact answer that works for all, since no one can ever share the exact same circumstances. I personally feel that by 48 hours of a fast, my body has begun autophagy. How far along, I couldn’t say. But I also work out very hard, lots of cardio, hot saunas, cold showers, black coffee, and sometimes green tea while fasting, so I know I enter autophagy much quicker that way.

You are eating too late. Bodies process calories differently in the morning vs evening. All you are doing is giving your body a bunch of calories to use for energy, which it stores instead because you don't burn as many calories in the evening or in a low energy state like sleep. Switch that meal to morning or noon instead. I switched my IF cycle from noon-6 to 10:30 am - 3:30 pm. That one change resulted in a 15 lb weight-loss and better sleep..
Год назад@JokerScribe +18
Don't forget that fat loss is also a form of Autophagy...self eating so to speak. If you are overweight and losing weight from fasting...then some autophagy has a occurred. If no weight loss has occurred, then no autophagy has happened, but it has to done over at least a week period as weight can easily go up and down depending on water and food in the body.
Год назад@johnmaloney1681 +1
No, it's not. When the body switches to using fat as an energy source when it runs out of glycogen, it consumes/burns fat. But Autophagy is the process in which damaged/mutant cells are turned off/killed, consumed, and replaced w/ new cells. Burning fat is not autophagy.

Amazing that humans can just continue life while fasting, apparently unlike rats. I've done fasts of various types (3 day, 5 day, seven day water fasts, alternate day, a fasting-mimicking diet following Dr. Long's guidelines, and these days eating between 9 and 11 am most days) for decades and i'd just continue my running and exercise schedule with no apparent problem. I even fasted on a marathon day and noticed no apparent difference. But i was only in my 60's when i did the marathon fast. Now i'm 81and don't do the water or fasting mimicking fast because my wife worries about my weight, so i keep a few extra pounds on to make her happy. I also do a Ferris Bueller Day Off once a week. On normal days i eat lots of meat, dairy, some veggies and fruit, a potful of supplements, and minimum of 50 gm fiber. Autophagy is dependent on how much food you consumed along with what the macros were whether heavy on protein, carbohydrates and fats during the previous meal plus your level of activity and your individual metabolism. Год назад@mrmoe110 +8
@@ryccoh the glucose monitor takes your blood glucose level and your ketone level. Using those numbers you can calculate what’s called your gki (glucose ketone index). That’s basically the number that indicates someone is in ketosis or autophagy.
Год назад@GST51 +2
@@mrmoe110 really ? All that will show is if you are in ketosis , You can be in Ketosis without autophagy, though can't you ? Ketosis is induced by using up all stored glucose and getting energy from fat .. where as autophagy will only be induced by a pretty long period of being in a fully fasted state ? I am no expert but that is my understanding, perhaps I am wrong ?
Год назад@mrmoe110 +6
@@GST51 yes you can be in ketosis without autophagy. You can get into ketosis and stay in ketosis by eating a certain way. But autophagy only happens when you’re fasting. Autophagy comes from a combination of your blood sugar being at a certain low level in addition to being in ketosis. The monitor I’m talking uses two types of strips to test your blood. One strip shows your ketone levels and the other shows your blood glucose. Then it does a calculation which gives a number called a gki (glucose ketone index) number. The gki is what indicates whether or not you’re body is in a state of autophagy. Some say you have to do long extended fasts to get into autophagy, but it can happen faster if you eat a diet low in carbs. So if you eat a diet that’s very low in carbohydrates then go thru a water-only day after 20+ hours you’ll probably be in autophagy. At least that’s when I’ve noticed it for me. Like people who eat super low OMAD diet will pretty much most likely be In autophagy the last few hours before they eat their one meal. She explains better than me probably https://youtu.be/UiKx-OmxQMA
Год назад@GST51 +1
@@mrmoe110 oh I see , I did think the time it takes to get into both ketosis and autophagy would vary hugely depending on your diet and glucose levels before starting , and surely the amount of exercise you do will determine quite how quickly you burn off all glucose in the blood, and before you enter a truly fasted state ..

I just finished a 5 day fast, my mental clarity increased, on day 2. This is my 4th fast in a year, the other 3 were 72 hour fasts. They get easier each time I do them. Must be my body getting used to fasting, also prep before the fast helps. I have a question for anyone. On my 5th day I started getting a general pain in my back, like in the mid section, not any specific location. does anyone know what this could be? Thanks in advance.

Folks looking to fast for a prolonged duration (2+ days) for the 1st time, just know that the 1st 24 hours are the worst. You are fighting your body's subconscious habbit of stuffing ur mouth every chance it gets. You will not realise how STRONG that urge is until you experience it yourself. But keep drinking water. Water weighs ur stomach and temporarily releaves your urge to eat. You wont die, trust me, your body is just a spoilt lil' brat. Keep going past the 24hr mark, it gets easier from there. Next time would be easier bcz know you know you can do it. Might even encourage some to try a bit longer 36-48hr Only advice, have water ALWAYS around you. Start small. You got this.😊

My assumption is, as the body becomes adapted to fasting, fat burning and autophagy it will take longer to reach optimal autophagy.. I make this assumption because it keeps getting easier for me to fast over time.
4 года назад@DS-eu2ww +17
wrong its about the same its based on how much glucose exists in your stores of tissues and organs if you are doing a 3+ day fast, you will not do this immediately again if you wait a few weeks before doing it again, these tissue and organ stores are filled back up except if you are obese and lost body fat. Im not fat, so my fasting cycles feels the same.
2 года назад@AmitK +1
@@DS-eu2ww that means if we check insulin level in blood during fasting, we come to know if sugar goes down autiphagy can start?
2 года назад@lorenzovillegas2457 +34
I think the opposite. I'm thinking that the more you fast the body can turn on autophagy easier... sort of like exercising that function you're training the body to do that. It shifts into getting the energy from storage and that's why it becomes easier to fast and keep up energy levels because the body knows what to do.
Год назад@pauldomnich1334 +1
It gets easier because you are becomeing more fat adapted. Your body more easily makes the transition to burning fat once glucose stores are depleted. You also become more efficient on utilizing ketones

Can anyone tell me whether a total fast is required to get the benefit, or is severely restricting calories also effective? For example, if I eat a couple of pickled cucumbers during the fasting period (total 16 calories), does that negate the benefit of my fast?

Many say that as long as you stay under 16 calories (not sure why that's the magic number, surely it's not that exact or the same for everyone, let's just say very low calories), and avoid protein, amino acids, and carbs altogether, you will stay in autophagy. Also, according to some, fat is ok and doesn't cause an insulin response, so doesn't break a fast. Personally, I am doing it for health reasons and prefer to err on the side of caution, so I only do ACV, salt, and lemon juice.
