World War II Every Day with Army Sizes

Hi everyone, I'm sorry for the very long wait in uploads, however, hopefully you will understand why, as it has taken me almost a year to research and produce this video.
On September 1st, 1939, Germany declares war on Poland and throws the world into the largest conflict humanity has ever seen. I have done my best to do accurate borders, encirclements and army sizes.
If you see any mistakes or inaccuraices, or if you simply just have suggestions, then let me kno in the comments and I will include them in my next video!
Besides, sit back and relax, I hope that you enjoy the video!

@M Z I think the Finns were shown separately since they could hardly be called a part of axis when they didn't really get any support from Germany outside of a few planes. I admit that I'm very biased about this since I'm Finnish myself.

The king knew he couldn’t hold back Germany. So he didn’t even try. This immediate capitulation functionally allowed him to put Germany in the awkward “victor’s” position where Hitler needs to tout how great it is to accept your new Nazi Overlords. So he can’t go around obviously oppressing everyone. This meant the Danish king could actually sort of protect his people in the long run, instead of what happened to the Poles. There’s a reason almost all Danish Jews survived. Well, there’s a lot of reasons, actually, but one of them was this exact fact.

Seeing the ebb and flow, the victories, defeats, retreats, halting, stalemate, counter offensive, and seeing the changing of territory really shows how bleak the war started and how it shifted towards the favor of the Allie’s. Seeing how thin Germany was stretched, it’s no surprise they lost

This new concept has lots of potential. It gives more insight on how powerful countries actually were. Usually, you only have country sizes, which can easily be deceptive. Of course, there’s still a lot more to it than that.

My American side (I have a Russian side of the family) great-grandfathers were a cook and a machine-gunner and bomb dropped on the back of the plane. My Russian great-grandfather fought at Stalingrad. Miraculously, all three survived. In their honor, I learned about WW2. Including watching this video.

He had gunshot and shrapnel wounds to his chest, stomach, legs, and he was forced to walk on crutches all his life. My other grandfather went missing (probably died) in the battle for Rzhev. Once Operation Barbarossa failed in late 1941, the writing was on the wall and the war was basically lost for Nazi Germany. The entire German strategy depended on a rapid victory (3 months or so). Given the vast size and logistical issues, there was no way Nazi Germany could have won a protracted war of attrition against the USSR.

So much emphasis is placed on D-Day as the turning point of the war, but there were so many more significant moments in the greater scheme of things way before that. The greatest of which has to be when Barbarossa starts. The number of men involved is frightening. The bulk of the fighting force throughout the remainder of the war is always on the eastern front, and my high school history barely even makes mention of that theatre of the war. If those 3 million men were reserved to fight on the Western front later in the war, the allies would have been driven back into the sea. No question, and that's before any reinforcements could be called up from the Soviet Union assuming they were still allied. The Americans like to think we saved Europe from Hitler. I personally think Hitler saved Europe by poking the Russian bear. I mean 7 million combatants by war's end. America, the British empire and all the free armies of occupied countries could only field 3 million men.

And there was not such a long arms race than before. Before WWI every european force tried many years the best they can do to have the best military. Then it neutralized each other. Also before the effective tanks, bombers and artillery, MG positions where too powerfull. So the defending always had the advantage, producing stuck frontlines. The neighbour countries hoped really long hitler would just stop and where not as equally prepared for war as germany then before WWI. That would by my assumptions.

The Operation Barbarossa section gives me chills every time. The music, the gigantic numbers, hundreds upon hundreds of thousands encircled. 80% of men born in the USSR in 1922 would be dead by the war's end, and those three months reflect it wholesale. The air raid sirens and general chaos of the music really drive home how barbaric it was.

It's crazy how quickly the germans invaded the western front! It barely lasts 17 seconds (from 1:37 to 1:54), which is merely 2% of the entire video's length. Also it's nice to have included North Africa on the map. The allies were not attacking on the western front because they were already busy reclaiming their colonies down there, crushing the German forces at the South of the USSR, which was in trouble due to Operation Barbarossa. Eventually that allowed them to reach Italy through the Mediterranean sea and take back the west.

There were also allot of ally occupied territories that were invaded by Japan. (Some of those places kind of welcomed it since it drove out their western occupiers. However, they were pretty brutal in most if not all the places they invaded. It is, after all, an invasion. They are there to conquer and not really to make friends.)

What a masterpiece 👍 could we do an alternate scenario or Ukraine or even ww1 or something like that like this in the future if that’s not too much to ask for. Well done and great effort!

Great video but just two issues that caught my attention - North Afrika numbers for the British are waaaay too low in 41. it seems it compared overall Axis strength vs only frontline troops for the Allies. And for Barbarossa again it seems to plot all Axis forced planned to be used for the East vs only immediately used Soviet forces. That is of course understandable but both times create the impression that the Axis were vastly outnumbering the British and Soviets but that wasnt the case. (In the desert at least not after operation compass)

This was very impressive!!! I assume you use official records on army stern 4th to get the numbers seen? Beautiful synthesis of graphics, sound and data. The numbers on the Eastern Front are literally awe inspiring. Shows what a titanic struggle it was!!

It’s terrifying to see how quickly Germany took the majority of Europe. Also, if the Soviets had capitulated (unlikely since they had backup plans if Moscow fell) the the war likely would have been lost. The US were hesitant to get involved and the British simply didn’t have the scale to defend themselves and the oil fields from the power of the Axis, if they had lost either the Axis would have been insurmountable.

If this can be done so precisely (as WW2 is the most well documented event in all of history) I would like to see one of these videos done like this on the locations and of the people that shant be named, during the events that shant be named; The alleged events that seem to run so parallel to WW2, as it where to the point that the two are absolutely inseparable. There must be enough proof to pull it off; surly there is, I've seen a picture of a pile of shoes, at school, and been reminded literally every single day since. Would be great if it were to start well betimes. That would be wise. Looking around at the world and our nations today - we can at least be thankful we aren't speaking German.. Though I do think that claim a bit - beguiling.

The huge German lead early in the war can hugely be contributed to using amphetamines to boost their combat effectiveness. As you can see however, over time, it really really hurt them.

@ArtyomCCCP calling it a special operation instead of war is funny, you act like Russia has hundreds of thousands more trained soldiers somewhere or high-tech equipment waiting. It's just matter of time when Russia gives up I guess, they can't occupy Ukraine and west will simply overproduce. Russia has been getting help from his friendly countries like Belarus, Syria etc also.

I can see why it took you so long. This is a great source material in and of itself. If this could be any more complete, it would perhaps include showing the bombing raids as they happened on Germany, Italy, etc. And perhaps maybe a table of total fatalities for Allies and Axis, military and civilian. But that's nearly impossible. Thanks for producing what might be the best numerically visual representation we'll ever see.

WW2 was mostly Germany and Russia fighting. Both sides lost, like, 7 million military deaths. America suffered 400,000 military deaths in WW2. That's a lot, yes, but compared to Soviets and Germans- that's nothing.

I find it amazing how Russia survived the early German offensive despite so many losses and still come back strong enough to hold them back and eventually turn the tides. It seems it has always been the strategy of Russia to win wars not through quick decisive action but by lasting longer than the enemy.

Some major decisions contributed to the outcome of the war, on this maps you can see the effects. Like changing from bombing airfields to terror bombing cities in the UK, that made the nazi's loose the air war over the UK. When invading Russia, spreading out too thin, focussing on land in stead of objectives ( like moscow). Fighting a war on several fronts at the same time. The effect of the USA joining the war. Breaking the Emigma code also had a major contribution to the outcome of battles i think even in the USSR. like a major tank battle when the weather was bad and the range advantage the nazi's had had little effect. On this video you can also clearly see the disarerous effect of not allowing a tactical withdraw for the nazi forces in the east. And the slow response after the inicial landing in normandy by the allies. What is interesting to see it also the uprising in Yugulavia and how quickly the number or soviet troops rose. Germany had around 80 million people, Russia / the USSR at that time 200 million, Russia recruited a lot of people, while a lot of german soldiers where either fighting or lost elsewhere or occupied in other countries like france/ greece / italy. Also a rather large number was lost in africa, while there was not so much to gain over there.

@Tyrrian That's a silly comment. The Russian army had already been in Paris and Berlin several times in the past centuries when after Russia was invaded but had no intention of holding them. Besides, there were plenty of Marxists in France and Germany at the time, why would they speak Russian if they took over leadership? Did Vichy France speak German? Nope.

The animation quality is really clean and with this new addition of showing the army sizes, something previous everyday videos have not done, I can definitely see this becoming the main video people go to for representing world war 2 from the map perspective. I'm curious as to how you animated all the movements, It would be awesome to find out for future map videos that I or other people may create. Keep it up bro.

A great exercise, congrats, but you should check your figures: for France, the Soviets and the Germans, it seems to be the number of effectively fighting soldiers (and not the total number of men, which is right, since only part of all men did fight at the same time, each army needs reserves, logistic, administration etc.). The same for Allied forces in North Africa, then Italy. But the Allied forces in France since June 1944 seem completely oversized: in total, when the South of France allied forces join the main North forces coming from Normandie, Allied forces in the West never had more than 80 complete divisions, i.e., with a systematic reinforcement, maximum 1,2 millions soldiers, certainly less. How do you reach the 2m, then 2,5... and even 4m at the very end!?

It messed up the borders in North Transylvania, Vojvodina and some borders for Bulgaria, it denies the existence of independent state of croatia... it's way too long for the little amount of info it shows and the amount of shit it leaves out. saying this is by far the best is fucking idiotic. The only difference this has compared to other ones is that the animation is smoother and if people value the video because of that to call it the best "by far" and a "masterpiece" then I have no words.
