I have created a compilation build video for our Garden Shack Build. This is a sped up version of all the build videos so you can see the complete construction in 30 minutes.
The individual build videos can be viewed here.
www.youtube.com/playlist?list...
If you have ever thought “I would love to build an Aussie Country Shack” stop thinking and just do it.
I have minimal building experience but have learnt a lot watching others on you tube. Make a start and see what happens.
Hope you enjoy the Video.

Hey Simon, That is very inspiring. It is similar to the design that I have been sketching since I was a kid, and now later in life would love to build something like this on some bush property with a lovely view. Thanks for taking the time to record all of this, I know that side of it takes a lot of time as well. Thanks and all the best as you now start to enjoy the fruits of your labour. Chris

I love the way you handeled the task with a manual saw. I thought that without an electric saw you could not do the job, but you sir proved me wrong. Great job!
2 года назадSimon Hahnel +3
Thanks 👍. I did end up getting a drop saw for the treated external palings as they were so wet they were almost impossible to cut with a hand saw. It just stuck in the wood. I could have let them dry a bit but I was too impatient.

@Simon Edmondson Sorry missed this comment. I actually work in IT. Much prefer building stuff. Always need a few projects on the go. Water is for before 4pm on weekends.

Yes, great work, curious to know what you do for a living, did't think tradie, because despite two pairs of well used boots, no tool belt, very few cans of beer and it took until almost the end of the video to see a site radio. I did notice a slab of water though lol. Great effort mate, especially all the extra work moving ladders and temp clamping because you were on your own.

Inspiring build! Love to see the use of the handsaw, still one of the greatest tools! How do you think the floor system (Bearers screwed to posts with batten screws?) will hold up over time? I'm imagining that the internal load probably would never be that heavy to compromise the screws but maybe after 10 or 20 years it might show signs of weakness. Thanks :)
10 месяцев назадМаксим Южный
I am also interested in this question. After all, the screws in this case work for shear and not for tension. But since the building has not collapsed, then such a decision has a place to be.
10 месяцев назадSimon Hahnel +2
I have added upright stumps as additional support under the floor beams. Just not on the video. Plus 30cm blocks under each post connection with an additional 3 batten screws. So long as there are no dance raves in the shack it should be ok I think.

I LOVE this! This inspires me and my husband to build this on our new piece of land we just bought. Would you mind sharing the dimensions of your build? Did you just wing it or were you following a plan. Job well done, it looks amazing.

Thanks. It is 5 x 3 m internal with a 1.8m veranda and 600mm overhang all around. Just made it up as I went along basically.

Hi Simon, great work mate! I want to do something like this for weekender on 7 acres i have outside kingaroy, Qld. till I sell my current house in Brissy and build a permanent house there, did you need building permits, licencees etc for temp building and if so are they hard to get? any info on this would be much appreciated, cheers. Kat.
2 года назадSimon Hahnel +2
Permits are always very locally specific. Best check with the local council. Usually based on size, proximity and height. Keep it small and you can't go wrong.

From my experience, if your thinking of building something similar, hide a thin insulation sarking under the iron roof. The condensation in humid & thawing frost conditions creates a lot of moisture dripping inside.
11 месяцев назадTony Doggett
@Simon Hahnel basically, how insulation works is you have a temperature gradient between outside and inside and the dew point of condensation occurs in the middle of the insulation where there’s no moisture or air movement.
9 месяцев назадSimon Hahnel +1
Correct. Wish I knew this prior to build. Now I need to take off the iron and add it. Always something to learn. Best part of doing something new.

Hello, Simon. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. Beautiful process, happy you all enjoyed and are enjoying it. A couple of questions... How much time did it take (in days/months) until it was done and where did you get the carpentering knowledge from / how much time do you need to first practice or study carpentery before being able to do such a project? Thank you. Enjoy of that lovely place

Thanks. The core build was approx. 390 hours of work and about $4K in materials. A lot was recycled. I have never studied carpentry. My father taught me a lot of tricks of the trade and he was a school teacher. The rest I learnt off YouTube.
