Great video! Here's my favorite aspects of it: - Straight to the point - No Clickbait, got exactly what was promised - No music playing in the background - A very good dog - Done with hand-tools (at least on-screen) Keep up the great work!

@Aaron Wilson You're right but as viewer I find it more interesting to watch off grid videos without power tools. Some don't even use things like nails and take what the nature gives them

@PassingBy_Music a mixture of pressure treated pallets and 2x6's

I love the ones that have cheap easy power tools mixed in. If I'm building stuff it's in the few hours of free time I have between family, work, etc. If I can save 75% of cutting time with a power tool then I can actually accomplish so much more and do everything else with hand tools.

I think he did a great job! He showed what can be done with very little. Yes I do think he is quite capable of winterizing this small house . I think his point was to show what can be done and in a short time without much. I found it to be very encouraging.

First: That's a damn good dog. Second: if you take strips of the same material you used for the roofing and put them in between your siding overlaps as a pressure fit, you'd get a huge amount of wind protection as well (similar to how moss was utilized between joints and logs in log cabins) that's also extremely weather resistant for almost no additional labor for the comparative gain (literally just cutting a sheet into 1/4 or 1/2in strips). Another good, cheap option, even lower labor option would be a few tubes of silicon caulking and then you can just seal the top seam from the inside. Help keep you safe when the rain gets more horizontal and the temp drops.

For those concerned about rot, a lot of these pallets are pressure treated because they’re stored in stacks in parking lots of warehouses and stores. My grandpa resided his barn using them and they lasted a good 30 years with no real rot so to speak.

@jacek ringwelski "new pallet" is a total nonsense, you take a pallet for free from the street, that's the main benefit of pallets, pallets are practically free building material

My main complaint is, the video said cabin out of pallets. Not pallets and great quality 4x4s. 😂 But great build tho. You could've made 4x4s by piecing the boards together , but still, solid building techniques. Great job

Great job in a beautiful setting and that stove is really neat! To do something like that here in Switzerland you would first have to get an environmental impact assessment; then you would need a landscape and visual impact assessment; then a transport report followed by a wind microclimate assessment; then you would need a sunlight/daylight analysis, then a heritage setting assessment together with an archeological assessment; then a landscape management report; then a tree impact assessment; and finally a flood risk assessment. (Oh, I nearly forgot the building permit).

You CAN do the same thing. Maybe not in this specific style of house or in this forest but if living self-sustainably on land is what you want to do then the only thing stopping you is your own limited beliefs whether they’re are about yourself or about getting out of your “complicated” situation. Im a very young father with a custody agreement and many other obstacles in my way. I’m planning on moving sometime within the next year. Look up earthen building, earth ships, hobbit homes etc and see for yourself how easy and affordable building a house really is

Azri'el Collier +68
Nice! I would use "threaded nails" which would make the place more sturdy and quieter to walk on. Threaded nails hold the wood tighter together and it would stay tight much longer. Also the change in the seasons of weather would not loosen the boards either. I work with pallet wood a lot and is why I know about the threaded nails as most pallets are put together with them so the pallet does not shift or loosen apart with loads on them.
10 месяцев назадAzri'el Collier
@Sophia Joyce Ferry: Most folks do not know. And they are not any harder to drive into the wood than common construction nails. Just have to be sure to hit the nail square on the head of it might bend. More so than a common. But, I use them a lot and do appreciate what they can do.
Месяц назадAzri'el Collier
@Travis: Ring shank nails are great for roofing. But not so for building. But even for roofing, I found that using them for roofing on my chicken coop and the racoons found they could pull up on the edge of the roof enough to dislodge the nails and get to the chickens. Wide headed screws became my roofing friened after that.
Месяц назадAzri'el Collier
@Axom Fitness Buddy: Screws could have been used, but it would take a lot of energy to screw them into the wood. There is a way to make it easier to do though but you also need the right kind of screws. Such as long shank wood screws for linking the timber. Shorter shanked screws for the flooring. And I would first drill the main starter lumber and the plank boards so the screws would not have to fight those pieces of wood. Then, using an auger hand drill (which I would have used to drill the pilot holes) and some driver phillips bits to drive the screws the rest of the way in.
Месяц назадAzri'el Collier
@SyahTech: Threaded nails might have slowed the project a bit, but not that much that it would have been any sort of a problem.
Месяц назадSyahTech
Yes, you can put any threaded nail as you want later, as addition sturdy,.. But dont slow down the good project at first
