Volta Breakdown After 3.5 Weeks of Ownership

    I got my first van breakdown 3.5 weeks into van ownership. The Volta system in my Storyteller Overland Classic started flashing red light of death, and a bunch of recent deliveries also experienced the same issue. I'm still waiting for it to be repaired, but here's a quick update on my experience dealing with Storyteller and Volta so far. I also offer up an advice at the end on how you could handle this if you are one of the affected owners.

Thank you for sharing your experience. As you indicated stuff breaks and it's nice to know how companies respond to issues. So, now nearly a month after this was posted, has your RV been fixed?

Thanks for the video! Honestly I think everyone in the forum is quite patient, more so that I would be. To pay a small fortune for these vans and have them be problematic from the start isn't acceptable!

I agree, but unfortunately the reality is they are all problematic, especially in the last year with pandemic, labor shortages and part shortages. Not sure if you read a recent news article on RV quality. It's an interesting read, especially the part about unable to find qualified and experienced labor. In the case of Volta, it appears one of their vendors supplied defective harness, probably for similar reasons. For me personally, I think life is too short and I'm willing to put up with some issues because what the van allows me to do outweighs the problems. But if quality is more important to you, I would definitely recommend waiting a few more years until all of this labor shortage blows over.

Hi peng, I really enjoy your video especially your sincerity and honesty. I am in the process of debating if I should order a 2022 storyteller versus having a custom van built (company called truevan). I am located in Roseville California. What was your decision at that time when you decided to choose the storyteller? Thank you

Thanks for sharing your Volta issue. Maybe I need to lower my expectation on problems arising on a new vehicle. Im still excited & patiently waiting for my Beast. So glad to hear that Storyteller and Volta took such great care of you. That says allot about the companies. Hope I wont have the same issue. Thanks for being open minded and level headed & not trashing everyone involved. That could have scared me off. Looking forward to your new content & experiences.

So far, no other issues. All I have to say is, once everything is working, it only took one night for me to fall back in love with the van again. :)

RV’s (“Ruined Vacations) ! Good one. I think we all want Volta to R&D their stuff and stop sending out bad equipment. We are all thankful they and STO care genuinely. Side note, we all have the adjoining windows and cabinets that don’t align because they are different cabinets (shower attachment ) and same with the window because both windows don’t open. Add a grill not a stove maybe because the microwave is a good back up but the induction stove show be great and a grill is always nice to grill outside. Love your kind words and thoughts. Beast #29 38k miles since 2/1/21. See you down the road…

Ha, I'd like to take credit for that joke, but I've heard it from somewhere else and I'm pretty sure it's an inside joke among RVers for years. I used to live 10 mins from Chrysler headquarters and still have a lot of friends in Automotive. Sometimes it's either design or vendor issues that nobody can foresee. What I appreciate Volta is doing is that they're trying to find the source of the problem and fixing it, instead of doing what a lot of car companies do, by replacing parts, denying there's any problem until it became too obvious and then issuing a half-hearted recall.

Thanks Mike! Good news is they're already sending out the replacement harnesses. So I should be back up and running by next week. A total of 3 weeks of downtime. Not bad in the RV world, especially right now.

Thank you. I'm currently using Progressive. They're the only one in my area that offers full replacement value for 3 years, meaning if the van is totaled, they will buy me an exact replacement van, or pay me the exact amount I paid when the van is new, with no depreciation. However, I recommend you get quotes from a broker or from multiple companies, since insurance quotes and options differ widely depending on which state or region you're in. I also can't tell you how much it runs because it can vary widely. Is this your only vehicle, do you live full time in it, how many miles do you plan to put on it, which state you're in, do you plan to bundle other insurance, etc. If you want to get a rough idea, you can always use Progressive's online quote form. Storyteller is listed as a motorhome builder with Progressive, so you can get a free quote pretty easily.

Thanks for the video. The sliding door window is common complaint. It has to do with the curvature of the door and is specific to CR Lawrence windows on sprinters. You can adjust the hinges on the cabinet faces and latch hook for the gap. I had the glue issue as well. It is a MB coating of some sort. You will see it seeping from the door drain holes, etc. its easily cleaned up with a citrus cleaner. Enjoy it! Im sure volta/STO will get you back on the road soon.

Oh cool. I replied to your FB before I saw this. Sounds like the latch adjustment is pretty easy. Maybe I'll take a look at it myself. I'm not handy but I managed to open the Volta cabinet myself, now I feel empowered. 😂

I am contemplating on about looking for another van conversions due STO is having a lot of problems after taking delivery of their unit. I placed an order back in July 2021 for the Ford Transit MODE LT, and I have not heard anything. I tried calling STO but to no avail. “Things will breakdown” I get that, but they are breaking 3 weeks into the ownership. To me, this is unacceptable for a $150,000. I am currently looking into building one myself out of a Ford Transit 350 AWD.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. We did hear of a group of STOs with Volta problems. It's terrible when things go wrong at the right time (vacation). That being said we purchased a STO and lived in it 8 months full time. We opt'd for a STO after reading horror stories of the Winnie Revel. I can say from experience that the STO customer service is excellent even in times of trouble. We lived in this van for 8 months and it was great. Unfortunately when building a van you have to rely on other manufacturers products to make the van! We would buy another STO in an instant. The only problem is the long wait time for these great vans! The ironic part is the Volta power system was our number one positive of this van as we talk about in our Loves and Hates of this van!

I ordered mine early Jan 2021, got it exactly on Sept 1 2021. Try calling around all the dealers, sometimes people cancel their order and you may get lucky jumping the line.
